Q: What vaccinations will I need to go to Africa?

Vaccination requirements depend on the country of travel, changing from month to month and your age. We recommend checking with your health care provider or local public health department prior to travel. Kenya, for example, currently (5/17/23) requires proof of COVID vaccination. Your airline will check this at check-in in the U.S. Rwanda does not require proof of COVID vaccine, but you will be required to take a PCR test (swab) on arrival in Kigali.

Q: Will I need a visa to go to Africa?

It depends on the country. Botswana, Namibia and South Africa do not currently require a visas. Zimbabwe does and it can be purchased at the border crossing. Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda require visas which must be procured prior to travel. It has been a simple process that we will help you with.

Q: What electrical systems can I expect to find in Africa?

Different countries have different outlet standards We have found this to be accurate and reliable information:

https://esgrounding.com/electrical-standards

Q: Will we have reliable electrical power on our safari?

Some of the more remote lodges turn off their generator at night. We have never had an issue with electricity beyond known powering off, but it is better to be prepared with plenty of batteries. I use a CPAP and bring a battery that can power the device for two nights without recharging. You will have the ability to recharge batteries during the day.

Q: Are there any luggage restrictions?

We ask that guests keep their checked luggage to 20 kgs (44 lbs.) and their carry-on luggage to 8 kgs (17.6 lbs). This is important on some of the tours such as Botswana where we have smaller flights. Soft-sided luggage is also easier to stow than hard-sided luggage. We bring all of our camera equipment in two Think Tank Streetwalker Hard Drive 2.0 bags and have never had a problem.

Q: How much clothing should I bring?

We bring the clothing on our back and one or two changes plus toiletries. Reliable laundry is available at almost every where we will stay for a nominal fee. We recommend long-sleeve shirts with SPF built in, long pants, light hikers and headwear. Close toed shoes are a must (no sandals).

Q: Are these tours physically demanding?

In Namibia, you will need to be able to walk 1 – 2 miles in places. The Rwanda gorilla treks require some walking including a brief stint on steep terrain, but the safaris are otherwise vehicle-based. You will get bounced around in some places, but our safaris are otherwise not physically demanding.

Q: How many people will be in a vehicle?

For most of the safaris we will have only three people in the back of the vehicle so that everyone has their own row. In Namibia, we will have 4 and 3 as most of the photography is done outside the vehicle until we get to Etosha. We will add a third vehicle at Etosha so that everyone has their own row.

Q: Will our price go up or will our safari be cancelled if the safari isn’t filled?

No. Your price will not go up and we will not cancel a safari because we didn’t fill it. Even if we only get one booking we are still going.

Q: How much money should I bring to tip the African guides and staff?

When you book with us we will send you a pamphlet with tipping guidelines.

Q: Should I bring cash or credit cards?

Bring both. We have not yet had an in-person credit card transaction declined and the credit card companies currency conversion is usually more favorable than you will get locally, but bring cash as well.
