Overview
We are often so focused on Yellowstone and Grand Teton's spectacular megafauna that we can miss the panoply of seasonal and year round bird life the area has to offer.
We began documenting our bird encounters in Greater Yellowstone through Merlin Bird ID in earnest a few years ago and now go out of our way to track who is where and when, noticing the subtle annual differences.
We decided to upload our bird encounters on to eBird and found that we have almost 350 species across over 800 sightings and soundings on our life list from our initial efforts.
Owls are year round denizens of the area, perhaps more commonly seen in spring and fall. Great gray owls are never far. Most songbirds and hummingbirds begin arriving in earnest in late April to early May while migratory fowl generally precedes them by a week or so along with our beloved sandhill cranes. Listening to their trill on early spring mornings is one of nature's great treats.
We can spend a half day, full day or multiple days looking for and listening to birds throughout the area or incorporate some birding in to a more general interest tour.
If there is a specific species you are interested in we can do that to. You may also notice under our international tours section that we are now leading tours to Costa Rica for birds, sloths and primates. Colombia and Panama are coming in 2027 or 2028.
