Overview

As the days begin to shorten the forests come alive with aspens, cottonwoods and willows turning their brilliant autumn colors. Moody skies bring brilliant sunrises and sunsets. The wildlife looks as good as they will all year.

Bears are fully engaged in hyperphagia, their manic drive to get enough calories to survive the winter. They are as active as they will be all year.

Early snow covers the high country where a change in altitude can reveal three seasons in a single day.

By early October the surrounding towns begin to draw down as crisp mornings portend retreating crowds. We can have bears all to ourselves during this, the best time of year. While the main stands of aspen and cottonwoods are retreating by early October, lower elevations see brilliant colors until the latter half of the month.

We have a scheduled, dedicated October grizzly viewing tour in early October, but can design a rounded trip that also takes a deep look at fall colors, elk, moose and all that the ecosystem has to offer.

FAQ's

What wildlife will I see?

Fall, October in particular, is our favorite time of year for wildlife. Everybody is busy getting ready for winter. Bears are in their manic feeding frenzy called hyperphagia. Moose have finished the rut. Bulls are hanging out in bachelor groups of a dozen or more. Elk bugling echos across the mountains. Wolves, coyotes and foxes are donning their winter coats while Teton pronghorn begin to think about their southward migration.

What will the weather be like?

Mornings can be crisp with temperatures down in to the single digits. Afternoons are generally mild but pleasant.

What should I wear?

Always dress in layers and wear waterproof close-toed shoes or booths. No sandals, please.  We wear long pants and long-sleeve SPF shirts. Always have headwear available.

Who is this tour for?

Our private tours are for singles, couples, families or groups looking for a deeper experience in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Will we do any hiking?

While we regularly walk 5 - 7 miles throughout the day we do not lead dedicated hiking tours. In Grand Teton we are limited to no more than a 1/2 mile from any trailhead and are specifically prohibited from going to Hidden Falls.

Do I need to worry about snakes?

No. There are no poisons snakes in Grand Teton. While there are a few prairie rattlesnakes in the extreme north of Yellowstone we won’t be walking in any of those areas. There have only been two reported snake bites in Yellowstone.

Will I need to bring bear spray?

No, we ask that you do not bring bear spray.  We will not be in the back country on our tours.  We will have some bear spray if a situation arises.
